Julian Venegas
Julian Venegas is a Ph.D. student in the CMSE department at MSU advised by Dr. Yuying
Xie. Prior to this he spent 3 years in the industry as a data scientist and received
his B.A. of Mathematics from Oakland University.
His research focus is the application of machine learning to problems in plant biology.
More specifically he will build deep learning models to predict the genic responses
of plants to abiotic stresses using genomic sequence data. By way of deep transfer
learning, he will leverage rich data across different species and stresses to ameliorate
the problem of limited plant data. The ultimate objective is to contribute towards
a deeper understanding of how plants will respond to environmental challenges and
hence facilitate crop breeding.
